La semana pasada, mientras buscaba inspiración en internet, me encontré con el canal de youtube de Lori González. En el, explica, entre otras cosas, cómo tejer al estilo Al Sadu, tejido típico de los beduinos de la península arábiga.
Last week I was surfing the net, looking for inspiration. I found Lori Gonzalez’s youtube channel. I watched her videos on Bedouin weaving and I decided to give it a try. She talks about Al Sadu weaving, traditional cloth from the Arabian peninsula.
Monté mi telar según sus instrucciones y me puse manos a la obra – para tejer y destejer, hacer y deshacer. Las instrucciones de Lori eran claras, pero algo se me escapaba. Estudié fotos bajadas de internet. Pero no, lo que realmente necesitaba era una muestra de verdad. Mis vecinas, que siempre confían en mí, me decían que no me desanimara, que seguro que lo conseguía descifrar. Después de horas, por fin caí del burro -¡claro que tenía una muestra: estaba sentada encima de ella! El cojín que uso cuando tejo en mi telar portátil es un viejo cojín de diwanía que compramos en Kuwait en los años 80.
I set up my inkle loom as per her instructions. And wove and unwove and wove and unwove. Lori’s instructions are great and yet…If only I had a real sample on hand: although the directives were clear, although I downloaded photos, I really needed to handle a piece of Al Sadu cloth. After hours working outdoors, with my neighbors encouraging me (“You will figure it out. We know you will.”), I suddenly I realized I had to literally get of my arse: the cushion I use when weaving is a Diwaniya cushion bought in Kuwait in the 80s – Al Sadu weaving!!!

So here you are: a picture of my first sample once I’d figured it out, together with my Diwaniya cushion.
La segunda muestra un juego de dos rombos diferentes. Tardé una semana en tejer la primera cinta. Ésta la terminé en un muy largo día de trabajo.
This next one shows two almost identical diamond patterns. If the first sample took a week to weave, this second one was done in a whole day of weaving.
Y esto es lo que tengo en el telar ahora: una cinta en blanco y negro utilizando, por primera vez, una mezcla de algodón y acrílico. Al ser más grueso, el trabajo va un poco más rápido. Pero como suelta pelusilla, los hilos se pegan mucho, dificultando la tarea. Los diseños los saqué de la página web de Laverne Waddington sobre telares de cintura.
And the last photo is of a black and white warp using a cotton/acrylic blend – a much thicker yarn then I usually use. The diagrams are taken from Laverne Waddington’s webpage on back strap weaving.
